Northbrook: The Eclectic Communities of My Life
By Judith J. Hughes Along with presiding over the Historical
Society and Northbrook Arts Commission, Judy has volunteered
countless hours in other activities to improve Northbrook. -
December 2005
To me, the village I have called home from more than 40 years is a
very special place. It is the home of my family, and home to the
neighborhoods and communities of my life.
Northbrook has many neighborhoods. Each is a community of its own.
There are school communities, religious communities, neighborhood
communities, recreational communities, civic, service and club
communities, avocation and hobby communities to name just a few.
Each is strong enough to stand on its own merit. Yet, a powerful
and colorful pattern emerges when the neighborhoods come together
into a village.
My communities are eclectic. Outside of my personal family life
are neighborhoods filled with historical interests including
research and education, civic, service, art, music, and an
awareness and appreciation of the beauty of our surroundings.
The ribbons of forest that nestle the village on three sides
provide a spectacular impact in every season of the year. Among my
favorites are the many shades of green in a Northbrook spring; the
blazing colors of autumn and the quiet of a snow-covered winter
day. Old oak and hickory groves, and the river that gave the town
its name are other favorites. The groves often go unnoticed and to
many, the river is just the crick – not worth notice, or of no
significance. To me it is a canvas that is ever changing in sight
and sound.
The communities in our Village are made up of friends and
acquaintances sharing the same experiences and likes. Sometimes I
liken Northbrook to a beautiful patchwork quilt that is made of
communities instead of cloth. The thread that holds these
communities together is the people – the friends and acquaintances
who live and work together in the communities of our lives.
While I know the people who populate my communities, I also know
that within each are people who populate other communities. Think
about the many people you have known in town through your
activities and you’ll see the incredible joining of communities
that form the circle of your life. Words are inadequate to
describe my extended neighborhood family – suffice it to say they
are the sunshine of my day.
There are many opportunities to become involved in the communities
of Northbrook. We are blessed to have such wonderful schools,
parks and a library that are among the very best in the nation and
all have a place for you to serve. The Village, civic and service
organizations and other groups also welcome your participation. If
it interests you, there is a place for you to participate to your
level of comfort. Who knows, you may even make a difference in the
lives of your neighbors. You will certainly enrich your own life
as what you give to others comes back to you tenfold and in
unexpected ways.
Poet Rabindranath Tagore once said, “I slept and dreamt that life
was joy. I awoke and saw that life was service. I acted and
behold, service was joy.”
The Village of Northbrook is home to my family in every
connotation the word home brings to mind. |

It’s not a surprise to most that Northbrook
is cold in the summer and hot in the winter. What many people
don’t know is that September is the most beautiful month of the
year for us. The sun is shining and the leaves are beginning to
change colors.
But what most of us in the
Chicago area live for are the summers. It is worth it to live in
the cold for 9 months of the year just to experience what Chicago
has to offer in the summer.

The Northbrook Historical Society was organized in December 1973
and Incorporated in March 1974 by residents interested in
preserving the history of our Village. As stated in the bylaws,
the purpose of the society is:
To discover, collect, preserve and disseminate knowledge, which
will establish or illustrate the history of the Village of
Northbrook, its exploration, settlement, development and progress.
NORTHFIELD INN - HOME OF THE NORTHBROOK HISTORICAL SOCIETY
The landmark Inn served as a welcome stop on the two-day trip from
Chicago to Milwaukee during the late 1800s. In 1901 the Frank
Bartelme family moved their business from Chicago to Shermerville
(now Northbrook) and established the Northfield Inn as one of the
finest restaurants on the North Shore. The carriage trade flocked
to Bartelme's for all you could eat for $1.00 chicken dinners,
complete with Mrs. Bartelme's homemade salads and pastries.
A dance pavilion, picnic area and bowling alleys added to the
popularity of the Northfield Inn. Until its doors were closed for
the last time in 1973, the Inn was a leading social and political
center for Shermerville and Northbrook.
When the Bartelme property was sold, the new owner wanted to tear
down the Inn to build condominiums. Through community support the
Historical Society was able to save the Inn by raising the money
necessary to move and restore it. From its original location at
the corner of Shermer and Waukegan Roads, the Inn slowly rolled
down Shermer Road and across the park to its new site on the
Village Green on January 17, 1975.
Many hard working volunteers put in countless hours remodeling and
repairing the old Inn. Following the extensive restoration, the
Northfield Inn was dedicated and opened as a Historical Museum on
July 4, 1976. |
